Jesus Protects His Mom

Let’s finish our protection theme with one last one event from Jesus’ life. It is mind boggling. Jesus has been crucified. He hangs on the cross for 6 hours (9am till 3pm). Words simply fail to adequately describe the torture and pain that Jesus went through. Toward the very end of His suffering Jesus, amazingly, turns His attention away from Himself to His mom. He turns to His mother and John and basically says, “Care for her as your own mother!” (John 19:25) Any other person under than kind of agony would collapse and just wait for death. Jesus’ love for His mother motivates Him to protect her by charging John to care for her! It is wonderful to see Jesus making provision for Him mom!

[Note* An alternate character element you can see in Jesus here is His empathy. Even though Jesus is God, He still understands what Mary will face once He has died. Jesus sees her again after He is resurrected. However, she will not live seeing Him on a daily basis. He knows that and can feel her grief. He also knows her daily practical needs. So He charges John to care for her. Jesus’ empathy is critical to understanding that He knows our lives, joys, sadness and suffering… and will be with us!]

Take Away

God Is Just Like Jesus
Hebrews 1:3 says Jesus is the exact representation of God’s being. Therefore the protection we can see in Jesus during His earthly existence exactly represents God’s protection. We have seen 8 or 9 examples of Jesus’ protection (and there are many more). These reveal the way God protects people. Jesus’ visible example of protection shows us God’s protection, even though He is invisible.

1st Commandment Prayer
Jesus, even in the middle of your great suffering and pain you are concerned about others and your focus is on them, not yourself! You are the Beautiful God! It is just the angels say in Revelation 5:9, “You are worthy of all honor and praise because of who you are and what you have done!” This is the “kind of person” that you are! No other human in history comes anywhere close to your Goodness!

2nd Commandment Worship
After we first “give” ourselves to worship Jesus for His goodness… then let’s progress to the 2nd commandment. We engage with Worship 1st and Life Application 2nd. We just got a picture of how Jesus protects His mom. How about us? Who are we protecting and providing for?

This Week’s Text:
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:25-27)
